Antoine
Maurice
Devine came up with the idea for
“The Cure” not long after arriving in San Francisco
to
build a law practice. The .dotcom era was in full swing, and
long
hours,
including weekends and holidays, were the norm.
However, the
idea
would not go
away, so in his spare time, he began piecing
together the
story.
Born
in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and
spending his teenage years in Arizona,
Antoine aspired to become an architect, but became
curious about
the law. Demonstrating the versatility of his interests, he
majored in
finance,
and graduated from Jackson State University. Along the way, he also ran track,
specializing in
hurdles and
sprints.
He
spent 10 years in
the financial field
before his curiosity with the law bloomed. He sold a
successful
regulatory
consulting business, and graduated from the University of Texas
at Austin. He spent a
short time practicing in Texas
before passing the California bar, and heading out West to begin a
career as a
securities attorney.
Along the way, he was involved in drafting federal laws as an intern
with the
Securities & Exchange Commission, and state laws in Texas
and California. While
practicing in Texas, Antoine won an important procedural
case that garnered
the first en
banc
decision of the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals in
over a
decade, opening the door for
an appeal.
Soon
after arriving in San Francisco,
Antoine read a
story about a prominent breast cancer research investigator who had
been found
guilty of committing the largest fraud in North American history in his
reports
of his clinical trials’ success. He thought of what might
happen
if a cure for
breast cancer were indeed found, but was never made public. What ensued
was
five years of research into the complex inner workings of the breast
cancer
research industry.
When
the .dotcom bubble burst, Antoine
moved back to Arizona
and began writing The Cure, published by
BluQuill
Publishing, LLC. After a five-year period during which Antoine returned
to San
Francisco
to take
up regulatory work in the financial services
industry, he is home again in Arizona,
residing in the Ahwatukee Foothills area of Phoenix,
surrounded by the South
Mountain
ranges. He is currently working on Machete-Return of the Celtic, a
crime/horror
novel that will be published in 2010.
